Joel Rodriguez is the founder and head instructor of Rodriguez Jiu-Jitsu Academy (RJJA), built on a
foundation of discipline, authenticity, and real-world effectiveness. With over 14 years of dedicated
training in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, Joel brings a high level of technical knowledge shaped through elite
mentorship and high-level competition.
A 2nd-degree black belt, Joel has lineage under Coral Belt Professor Eduardo de Lima and 3rd-degree
black belt Professor Kevin Peterson. His foundation is rooted in strong fundamentals, pressure-based control, and
practical application—principles he instills in every student.
As an active competitor, Joel has tested his skills on some of the sport’s most respected stages,
including IBJJF Open events, the Pan American Championships, and professional super fight
promotions such as Fight 2 Win. His competition experience directly influences his teaching, ensuring
students learn techniques proven under pressure.
In addition to competing, Joel has successfully coached youth athletes at major events, including
Jiu-Jitsu World League and the Pan American Championships, guiding many to gold medal finishes.
His ability to develop competitors reflects both his technical expertise and his commitment to each
student’s growth.
Known for his attention to detail and no-nonsense approach, Joel focuses on what works—whether in
competition, self-defense, or everyday training. His coaching style blends structure with intensity,
creating an environment where students are pushed to improve while still feeling supported.
At RJJA, Joel emphasizes more than just technique. He instills values of respect, consistency, and
mental toughness, helping students grow both on and off the mats. His goal is to build not just skilled
practitioners, but a strong, tight-knit community.
